The Department of Inorganic Chemistry has been keeping its chronicle since 1921 – since the opening of the Kharkiv Pharmaceutical Institute.

In 1921-1924, inorganic chemistry was a part of the course “Research of pharmaceutical and chemical-pharmaceutical preparations”, which was taught at the department of pharmaceutical chemistry (the chairman of the department and the first rector of the Kharkov Chemical-Pharmaceutical Institute – Doctor of Chemicals, Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professor Mykola Ovksentievich ).

1924 – Department of Inorganic Chemistry of Kharkov Pharmaceutical Institute was created. In different years it was headed by: Professor AP. Hamadorian (1924-1925), an eminent scholar of the Mendeleev School, author of more than 70 scientific papers on macro- and micro-heterogeneous catalysis; the wonderful teacher Professor Ivan Teletov (1924-1930); Professors Yuriy Korshun and S.V. Miloslavsky (1931-1941).

In 1941-1944 the department together with Kharkіv Pharmaceutical Institute was in evacuation in the city of Semipalatinsk.

The restoration of the material base and the educational process at the department in 1944-1953 was carried out by the candidate of chemical sciences, associate professor EO Krech. The course of inorganic chemistry at this time was 120 hours of lectures and 118 hours of practical classes. The research work was devoted to the problems of elemental analysis using “wet” methods of combustion of organic substances and the study of the reaction of interaction of chlorine with metal oxides.

From 1953 to 1956 the department was temporarily headed by the associate professors K.M. Skibina, DA Kornienko (Associate Professor, Candidate of Chemical Sciences; Scientific Degree – Chemistry of Pyrrole and Carbopyrrolidine; Second Book of 7 Textbooks, Over 20 Scientific Papers), E.M. Voroshin (Associate Professor, Candidate of Chemical Sciences; scientific direction – spectrographic study of the structure of phenols and some of its derivatives; supervised 2 PhD theses).

Historical information

In 1956, the course of inorganic chemistry was taught at the Department of Physical Chemistry, headed by the candidate of pharmaceutical sciences, associate professor V.A. Seminko. The lecture course was reduced to 102 hours and then to 72 hours.

Since 1966 an independent department of inorganic chemistry was organized, which was continued by V.A. Seminko.

Since 1974 Professor Alexey Kondratovich Sukhomlinov has been the Chair of Inorganic Chemistry. His name is related to the development of scientific direction in the study of acridine chemistry; 2 doctoral, 7 PhD theses were defended and the first inorganic chemistry manual was published.

Under his direction, the scientific activity of the department was devoted to the problems of synthesis and study of the fine structure of acridine derivatives, the study of the dependence of their biological activity on the location and nature of substituents, which is important for the directed synthesis of biologically active compounds.

In 1986 – 1989, the duties of the head of the department were fulfilled by Candidate of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Associate Professor Yevgen Levitin. During this period, the lecture course was significantly expanded and improved. Particular attention was paid to the biological and biogenic importance of the elements and their compounds, as well as the mechanism of their participation in metabolic processes. Methodical recommendations for full-time and part-time students are developed and issued. The scientific work was devoted to the synthesis of benzyl acid hetero derivatives and to the study of the properties of the compounds obtained.

Since 1989, the Department of Inorganic Chemistry has again become a course in the Department of Physical and Colloidal Chemistry, headed by Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professor Vladimir Kabachny.

Historical information

From 1991 the department became independent again, the head – Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor Vasily Shapovalov (1991–1992). At this time, in connection with the creation of a new Faculty of Industrial Pharmacy, the staff was faced with the task of reorganizing the educational process, revising a lecture course and a laboratory workshop. There is a number of educational and methodical literature: “Thermal effects of chemical reactions”, “Electrolysis”, “Corrosion of metals” and others. For the purpose of teaching chemistry at the preparatory department methodical instructions were issued: “Basic information about the initial concepts of chemistry”, “Basic laws of chemistry”, “Chemical bond”, “Structure of the atom”. Since 1991, the department has been developing new curricula, and for the first time an examination of students’ practical skills has begun.

Since 1993 the department has been headed again by Candidate of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Associate Professor Evgeny Levitin (since 2004 – Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, since 2006 – Professor). During this period the department staff improved all kinds of educational activity. The scientific work is devoted to the synthesis of halogen derivatives of benzoic acid and acridines, created on their basis, to the study of physicochemical and biomedical properties of the obtained compounds. The results of research and methodological work of employees are widely reported in professional journals
